While many are still under the impression that plastic surgery is just for women, recent statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery prove that is not the case. The ASAPS recently revealed that men account for about 10% of all plastic surgery procedures performed in 2012. While it may seem like a relatively small number, the number is up over 106% from 1997. So why are so many men now deciding to go under the knife?
Most commonly, to fight the signs of aging. As we age, it becomes harder to lose fat in certain spots, or to have the toned body of our younger selves. Plastic surgery allows men to combat these common problem areas, like male breasts, facial wrinkles or sagging, and areas of stubborn body fat. So what were the most common plastic surgery procedures for men in 2012?
Top 5 Plastic Surgery Procedures for Men
Liposuction: The most common plastic surgery procedure performed on men in 2012, liposuction removes excess fat from areas that regular diet and exercise can’t seem to get rid of. It’s commonly used to target the midsection, love handles, chest, and more.
Rhinoplasty: Widely known as a nose job, rhinoplasty can fix a myriad of aesthetic problems involving the nose. For men dealing with a nose that is too big, has bumps or depressions, or is asymmetrical, rhinoplasty presents a helpful solution.
Eyelid surgery: A man’s eyelids can begin to droop with age, causing men to turn to blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery. By removing excess skin and fat from both eyelids, patients can attain a younger and fresher look in their face.
Breast reduction: Many men struggle with gynecomastia, or enlarged male breasts, as it can be hard to get rid of fat in those areas with the standard weight loss methods. Male breast reduction involves the use of liposuction to remove the excess glandular tissue in the area.
Ear shaping: For those who have large, misshapen, or protruding ears, ear shaping may present a good option. Many men are embracing this procedure as a way to correct any aesthetic imperfections that are preventing them from looking their best.

Each year, the American Society of Plastic Surgery releases a report detailing emerging trends in the world of cosmetic medicine. This year’s data, unsurprisingly, showed a significant jump in the number of minimally-invasive procedures performed nationwide. Topping the list was BOTOX®, with over 6 million procedures being performed in 2012 alone! Of course, BOTOX isn’t the only treatment that saw significant growth. Read on to find out which minimally-invasive procedures made the cut.
ASPS Data: Top 5 Minimally-Invasive Procedures in the US
BOTOX: Botulinum toxin type A – a category that includes treatments like BOTOX® and Dysport® – was far and away the most popular cosmetic procedure of the year. Sporting an 8% increase in one year alone, these treatments work to gently ease away fine lines and wrinkles. Essentially a muscle relaxer, BOTOX is particularly well suited for “dynamic lines,” such as frown lines and crow’s feet.
Soft tissue fillers. Coming in at number two are soft tissue fillers – treatments such as Restylane® and Juvéderm®. Working to fill in deep-set lines and wrinkles, fillers can also be used to plump the lips and sculpt the cheeks. As one of today’s fastest-growing treatments, filler use increased by a full 5% last year.
Chemical peels. With over 1.1 million chemical peels performed in 2012, it’s clear that this skin-smoothing treatment is still quite popular. Using a chemical solution to remove the skin’s damaged outer layers, these treatments work to improve the appearance of scars, blemishes, or any irregularities with your skin.
Laser hair removal. For those tired of shaving, waxing or tweezing, laser hair removal is often an ideal solution. Quick and precise, the ASPS reports that laser hair removal rose 4% in 2012.
Microdermabrasion. Working to restore a fresh, more youthful appearance, microdermabrasion uses a stream of fine particles to exfoliate the skin. As one of today’s most popular “MedSpa” treatments, the ASPS is reporting nearly 1 million procedures performed in 2012.

What is the true sign of a successful cosmetic procedure? For our practice, the answer remains simple: patient satisfaction. That is, whether or not a patient would do it all over again, if given the chance. Or perhaps, whether they would recommend a treatment to a friend or family member.
Of course, it’s always been difficult to measure patient satisfaction on a bigger scale, to understand the success of certain procedures across the board. Thankfully, that’s where plastic surgery community site, RealSelf®, comes in. Drawing together the opinions of thousands of users, patients have the opportunity to vote on whether cosmetic procedures were “worth it” for them. RealSelf compiles these “votes” and assigns each treatment a “Worth It” rating from 0 to 100. So, want to know how Tummy Tuck Surgery stacked up?
According to the most recent figures, Tummy Tuck Surgery earned a remarkable 95% Worth It Rating. That’s one number that is very hard to deny!
Is Tummy Tuck Surgery Right for Me?
Not sure what Tummy Tuck Surgery is all about? Here’s a brief introduction. Technically referred to as “abdominoplasty,” a Tummy Tuck works to flatten and reshape the abdomen by removing excess fat and skin and tightening underlying muscles. An ideal solution for those with stubborn fat and unresponsive loose skin, Tummy Tuck Surgery is also a popular component of a “Mommy Makeover” procedure as well as following extreme weight loss.
Performed under general anesthesia, Tummy Tuck Surgery generally requires two incisions: one from hipbone to hipbone and one around the navel. Abdominal muscles are then repositioned and stitched into place. The skin is then stretched down and excess tissue is permanently removed. All incisions are closed and sterile surgical dressings are applied. As one of today’s most popular and effective cosmetic procedures, Tummy Tuck Surgery remains the ideal way to achieve a flatter, more toned abdominal area that fits the natural contours of your body.

One of the most important goals of our practice is staying on the cutting-edge of cosmetic medicine. In keeping with that, we are now proud to offer one of the most exciting new advances in the world of breast augmentation surgery: gummy bear breast implants. Also known as “cohesive silicone gel,” gummy bear implants have been used widely in Europe for over a decade. Now available in the United States, our practice was the first in the area to offer this safe, new alternative to silicone or saline-filled implants. And, because we want our patients to understand all their plastic surgery options, we wanted to take a moment to introduce you to this exciting new product and answer some of your most pressing questions. Are you ready to find out what gummy bear implants are really all about?
Here is our list of today’s Top 5 Patient Questions About “Gummy Bear” Breast Implants:
What can breast augmentation do for me? For those struggling with a small or disproportionate bustline, breast augmentation surgery can be an ideal solution. Working to increase breast size, fullness and proportion, the procedure historically relied on silicone or saline-filled implants. Now our practice is excited to offer cohesive silicone gel or “gummy bear” breast implants, manufactured by Sientra®.
Where does the term “gummy bear” come from? While the name might sound a bit funny, gummy bear implants are named for their consistency and resiliency. Like gummy bears, they have the ability to maintain a consistent shape, even when cut.
What are a few advantages of gummy bear implants? Compared to traditional silicone or saline-filled breast implants, gummy bear implants are more likely to maintain their shape over time. What’s more, since the implants are predominantly solid, leakage becomes less of a concern down the line.
Are gummy bear implants FDA approved? Our practice is now proud to offer Sientra® breast implants, what many consider to be the “gold standard” in gummy bear type breast implants. And, according to a March press release from the manufacturer, the company “has received FDA approval of its portfolio of Silimed-brand silicone breast implants.”
Is breast augmentation right for me? The best way to find out if you’re a candidate for breast augmentation is to schedule an appointment with a board certified plastic surgeon in your area. As Suffolk County’s largest all-board certified plastic surgery practice, we encourage those on or around Long Island to contact us today.

Our practice is now proud to offer one of the most popular new fillers on the market: Belotero®. Quickly becoming a go-to treatment for fine lines and wrinkles, this hyaluronic acid filler offers remarkably natural results – safely, easily and effectively. And, because we know that the best patients are those who know all their options, we thought we would take a moment to introduce this cutting-edge treatment. Want to find out what other patients are asking?
Here is our list of the Top 5 Questions About Belotero:
What exactly is Belotero? Belotero is one of the most advanced dermal fillers available today. Working to “fill in” wrinkles and restore a more youthful face shape, Belotero integrates with the tissues of your skin, providing volume and enhancing your natural facial contours. Belotero is composed primarily of hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the body.
Is Belotero the same thing as BOTOX®? While BOTOX and Belotero are both powerful wrinkles treatments, how they work varies slightly. Where Belotero is best suited for deep, persistent lines around the nose and mouth, BOTOX is more appropriate for “expression lines” like horizontal lines across the forehead. A highly purified protein, you can think of BOTOX as essentially a muscle relaxer.
Is Belotero FDA approved? Yes. For over a year, Belotero has been FDA approved “…to smooth moderate to severe wrinkles and folds,” explains the manufacturer. And, in the words of the FDA, “Belotero Balance will help smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. In a clinical study, most (103 out of 118) patients needed two injections to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing. The smoothing effect lasts up to six months and then slowly goes away.”
What are some advantages of Belotero? Belotero is a simple treatment with big results! Completely minimally-invasive, patients can expect natural-looking results with little to no downtime. And, while the results aren’t permanent, they can often last up to several months!
Is Belotero right for me? The best way to find out if you’re a good candidate for Belotero is to contact our offices and schedule a consultation. This is a great time to explore your treatment options and have any remaining questions answered.

Plastic surgery is on the rise! With more than 1.5 million cosmetic surgical procedures performed in the year 2011, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons is reporting a full 2% growth in plastic surgery procedures in just one year alone! And, that figure doesn’t include the millions of additional minimally-invasive procedures performed in the same year — treatments like BOTOX®, soft tissue fillers, microdermabrasion and others. So, which procedures came out on top?
Here are Today’s Top 5 Plastic Surgery Procedures, based on recent data from the ASPS:
Breast Augmentation: For countless numbers of women struggling with small or disproportionate breasts, breast augmentation surgery is often the answer. Using silicone or saline implants, the procedure works to increase breast fullness and symmetry. As the number-one plastic surgery procedure in the US, the ASPS reports that there were over 300,000 breast augmentation procedures performed in 2011, alone.
Nose Reshaping: Also known as “rhinoplasty,” nose reshaping is one of the most effective and time-tested procedures around. Working to improve facial balance and harmony, nose reshaping aims to correct a nose that appears too large, has a bump, seems too wide or appears crooked. Remaining one of today’s top procedures, the ASPS reports that there were over 240,000 rhinoplasty procedures performed in 2011.
Liposuction: If diet and exercise are still leaving you with stubborn, exercise-resistant fat, it may be time to explore liposuction. Working to fight off unwanted inches, liposuction removes stubborn fat and aims to re-sculpt the body. As one of the most versatile procedures around, common liposuction sites include the thighs, back, midsection, love handles and more.
Eyelid Surgery: One of the most common complaints among older patients is sagging, drooping eyelids. Thankfully, eyelid surgery is often the answer. Also known as an “eyelid lift,” the procedure removes fat and excess skin from the upper and lower eyelids to promote a fresher, more youthful appearance.
Facelift: Working to combat facial sagging and shave years off a patient’s appearance, facelift surgery remains one of today’s top plastic surgery procedures. By tightening underlying muscles and redraping skin around the neck and face, patients can enjoy a dramatically more youthful look for years and years to come.
